The Languedoc and Provence

The setting of Taking the Cross is the regions of the Languedoc and Provence in Southern France. While most people seem to have at least heard of Provence, most do not know how to pronounce the word Languedoc (Lan-gwuh-dock), much less know where it is located. The Languedoc is to the West of Provence and both areas are along the Mediterranean Sea. The principal cities in Taking the Cross are Orange and Avignon in Provence and Beziers and Carcassonne in the Languedoc. Carcassonne was restored in the nineteenth century after nearly being demolished. It’s the largest intact Medieval walled city in the world. The background image on this website is of the Chateau Comtal and the Aude Gate of Carcassonne.
